Nature’s Treasures: Pine Cone and Rose Hips on Vellum

This small study of a Pinus sylvestris (Scots Pine) cone and two deep red rose hips was my first introduction to vellum. Traditionally made from animal skin, it has a unique and velvety surface that provides a smooth and delicate archival-quality canvas. It is amazing to work on, allowing intricate details and vibrant colour. There are now plant-based vegan alternatives for those seeking an ethical choice. I have not personally worked with these alternatives, but I would love to hear from anyone willing share their experiences and insights.
