Pinus sylvestris
A study of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), following the branch from the small emerging cones through the male and female reproductive structures to the mature woody cone.
I was particularly drawn to the contrast within a single branch: the long, fine blue-green needles against the changing shapes, colours and textures of the cones as they develop. Painting it on Kelmscott vellum allowed me to build those details slowly, from the softness of the new growth to the dry, sculptural scales of the mature cone.
