Scots Pine Cone & Rosehip Study

Pinus sylvestris & Rosa sp.

A small, life-size study of a Scots pine cone and rosehip, painted in watercolour on vellum. I loved the contrast between the dry, intricate structure of the pine cone and the glossy red rose hip, with all its tiny imperfections and flower remnants.

Vellum is a brilliant surface to paint on. Unlike paper, the paint sits on the surface rather than soaking in immediately, so you can build colour slowly in fine, translucent layers. It is particularly lovely for capturing tiny details and rich, luminous colour. The vellum itself has subtle natural variations too, which I think adds something rather beautiful to the finished work.
