Many of my paintings begin long before I reach the studio.
Walking the hills and wild places of Scotland gives me the opportunity to observe plants in their natural habitat and to record their form, colour and character through photography, sketches and field notes.
Back in the studio, these observations become part of a slower process of botanical research, drawing and painting, creating work that is both botanically considered and connected to the landscape in which each plant grows.

I’ve always loved being in the hills, whatever the Scottish weather happens to throw at me. It’s often where my paintings begin too, whether something as small as a bright red cowberry catches my eye amongst the heather, or an entire hillside of cotton grass stops me in my tracks.
I studied Botanical Illustration at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, graduating with Distinction. My training taught me to look much more closely at the plants around me, and I love that there is always another tiny detail to notice, understand and somehow capture on paper.
