Rosa canina
This painting revisits a study of dog rose that I first worked on several years ago. I returned to the piece to explore another stage in the plant’s life, adding the rich red rosehips that appear later in the season.
The delicate pink flowers and fresh green foliage are paired with the glossy, ripening hips, bringing two very different moments in the plant’s yearly cycle together in a single botanical study.
I particularly love the contrast between the flowers’ fleeting softness and the bold colour and character of the fruit that follows.
